Chloe Grace Moretz to star in Little Mermaid live-action film
While Walt Disney has almost a dozen live-action film adaptions in the works, this is not one of them. This adaption of “The Little Mermaid” will be based on the original story written by Hans Christian Andersen, which is not as picturesque as the Disney version.
At one point Sofia Coppola was attached to direct the project, but quickly dropped out when Universal wanted to take a different approach than what Coppola had planned. Now Variety is reporting that Chloe Grace Moretz will star in the film as the titular role.
Universal and Working Title are reportedly working with Richard Curtis (Love, Actually) to get a script written for the project, the studio has not commented on how close the adaptation will be to the original story.
Just like the version you saw from Disney, the original Andersen version centers around a mermaid and a man that she saves from drowning. There are a few drastic difference than the Disney version you may remember from your childhood but we won’t spoil them for you.
Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce the film for Working Title, Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger will executive produce project. Mortez will also be seen in Universal’s “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.
The studio hasn’t made any official announcements at this time but if the deal with Curtis goes through you can expect more pieces to start following into place.
