Box Office Results: “Pan” falls flat as “The Martian” remains at number-one
A slow box-office release schedule wasn’t enough to save “Pan,” the latest Peter Pan adaptation from Warner Bros. Pictures. The film, directed by Joe Wright working off a script written by Jason Fuchs, only managed to make $15M at the domestic box-office over the weekend. Despite a well known cast including Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, Amanda Seyfried, Levi Miller and Cara Delevingne, the film opened in third-place overall.
Taking the top-spot for the second week in a row was “The Martian” with $37M across the country. Now in its second-week, the film has earned over $108M domestically. The film stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chasten and Kristen Wiig and was directed by Ridley Scott. The sci-fi epic follows a manned mission to Mars, during the trip Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm hits the crew and he is left behind.
Second-place this week went to the animated comedy from Sony Pictures called “Hotel Transylvania 2”. The film earned an additional $23M domestically this weekend ands stars the voice talents of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg and Selena Gomez. Now in its third-week since release, the animated film has earned a little over $116M.
Also from Warner Bros. Pictures is “The Intern,” starring Anne Hathaway and Rober Di Nero. The comedy-drama earned $8.6M over the weekend, the film remains in fourth place this weekend.
Rounding-out the top-five for the weekend is the action-thriller “Sicario” form Lionsgate. The film earned $7.35M at the domestic box-office. The film stars Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicia Del Toro. “Sicario” was directed by Denis Villeneuve, working off a script written by Taylor Sheridan. In the drama an idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by an elected government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.
