One of the Power Rangers was officially announced this morning. Lionsgate has confirmed that former Disney Star Naomi Scott will be taking on the role of the Pink Ranger when the film releases in 2017.
The film hasn’t finished casting the popular fighting force at this time, but considering that the project isn’t scheduled to release for another two years, they have plenty of time to do so. Lionsgate made the confirmation earlier today on the studio’s Instagram account stating, “It’s official! #NaomiScott will play the #PinkRanger in the @PowerRangersMovie! Coming in 2017…”
Only a few details have been released about the movie, other than it’s a “Power Rangers” film, and that by itself is pretty fantastic. Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (“X-Men: First Class”) wrote the screenplay for the project. The original story followed a band of regular high-school students that bonded with an extraterrestrial power that allowed the teens to work together and keep the Earth safe from the dozens of monsters that attacked their small town.
The series is based on the long-running Japanese “Super Sentai” show, but the film is expected to be based on the American version that became an instant hit for kids. Him Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearer and Roberto Orci are attached to produce the film.
This won’t be the first movie based on the property. The film “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie,” hit theaters back in 1995 as a modest success. There was a second film called “Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie,” which was released in 1997 but that film ended the franchise.
