Dove Cameron helps turn “Descendants” into a top-hit for Disney

Following a terrific-run as an original movie “Disney’s Descendants” is playing a key role in Disney’s latest success. Shows like “Bunk’d” and “Descendants” allowed the Disney Channel to rank as cable TV’s #1 Total Day network for the 3rd-consecutive quarter in Total Viewers.

The network reached 1.3 million in Total Viewers and was the #1 network across all TV for the 18th-straight quarter in Kids 6-11 and for the 26th quarter in a row in Tweens 9-14. Disney confirmed that, “for the 2nd quarter in a row and by its largest margin ever, Disney Channel more than doubled runner-up Nickelodeon in Tweens 9-14 was ahead of the now #3 network by double digits for the 17th-consecutive quarter in Kids 6-11.

One of the key components of “Descendants” is the series cast, with Dove Cameron leading the pack. The series itself is a mix of classic Disney castles and the traditional classroom atmosphere that creates, “a contemporary, music-driven story about the challenges adolescent offspring face in living up to parental and peer expectations,” according to Disney.

Just like the original film, the series takes place in the kingdom of Auradon. The film had Ben, the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from “Beauty and the Beast”), poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay, the trouble-making offspring of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella de Vil and Jafar, who were imprisoned on the forbidden Isle of the Lost for 20 years.

The series follows these descendants after they are allowed into Auradon for the first time to attend prep school alongside the teenage progeny of Fairy Godmother, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Mulan.

Cameron landed the role of Mal, the daughter of Disney’s Maleficent. She instantly became a hit on social-media and the show introduced her to a few million new fans that may not have seen her earlier work. Cameron had a long-history of popular projects under-her belt before “Descendants,” including roles on “Shameless”, “The Mentalist” and “Barely Lethal”. In fact, Dove Cameron just stared in an incredible music video for The Girl and the Dreamcatcher.

Disney fans probably know Cameron best from her work on the popular series “Liv and Maddie” but now know her as the purple-loving Mal. Also featured on the series are Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart and Cameron Boyce, each with their own impressive followings. Dover herself rocks about 774K follows on Twitter, while Booboo has 212K and Cameron Boyce has 1.13M.

Taking over the Total Day network for three quarters in a row is no small feet in today’s crowded market and Disney can bank a lot of that success on just these tow series alone. In both cases, we are hoping to see a lot of new content from Disney over the next few months.
