All systems are go for The Martian, film opens to $18M debut on Friday
FOX’s “The Martian” seems to be beating its high-expectations this weekend, the film earned roughly $18M according to Friday’s estimates. Scheduled to open across 3,831 locations, the movie is expected to be the box-office winner and critics can’t seem to get enough of the Matt Damon sci-fi drama. The film is projecting to hit the $50M mark before the end of the weekend.
In the film a manned mission to Mars turns disastrous when Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm hits the crew on the surface of the planet. Damon’s character is left behind but after he awakens he finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet.
With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott,
THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
While the screenplay was written by Drew Goddard, the movie is based on the novel written by Andy Weir. The film opened this weekend to minimum competition. We will have the full box-office weekend results this Sunday.
