Emma Watson will star alongside Tom Hanks in the new James Ponsoldt film-adaptation of “The Circle.” The film is a dark portrayal of the digital age, touching on privacy and personal-data, the project is based on the Dave Eggers’ novel of the same name.

Fans might know Ponsoldt best from his work on “The Spectacular Now,” he will be directing the “The Circle” while working off a screenplay that he wrote himself.

Hanks and Gary Goetzman are producing the film with Anthony Bregman and Ponsoldt. The project was picked up at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the project was originally starring Alicia Vikander but now Emma Watson will step-in as the lead.

“Emma Watson is one of my favorite actors, and her incredible talent, sensitivity and deep intelligence will bring an electric energy to ‘The Circle,’” Ponsoldt said.

As for the film itself, Watson will play the role of a newly hired employee at the Circle. This is a company that stores and links customer’s personal information from social-media and personal data sites like banks and profiles. Users can that access and store all of their online content with the company, resulting in a one-spot destination for controlling their online identity.

The plot then takes a darker turn as privacy and surveillance are exchanged behind closed doors for customer’s personal data and relevant information.

Watson’s next project in theaters will be her starring role as Belle in the new live-action film “Beauty and the Beast” from Walt Disney Pictures.
