J.K. Rowling offers new insight to Vernon and Petunia on Dudley’s birthday
J.K. Rowling is hard at work expanding the wizarding world of Harry Potter once again. The popular author recently updated the Pottermore fansite with a new background story that offers more insight to the moments within the final book; “Deathly Hallows.”
The new addition comes as part of a celebration, June 23 is the birthdate of Dudley Dursley. Fans should remember Dudley as the chubby and terrible cousin of Harry Potter.
So to kick-off another Dudley celebration, Rowling released new background information on Dudley’s parents, Vernon and Petunia.
The new info, which we will try not to spoil for you, goes into the names of Vernon and Petunia and just how they got along with Harry’s parents, James and Lily.
Rowling talks about Petunia’s constant worry that Vernon would be driven-off by her wizard-sister. In fact, Rowling explained that “Petunia did not want Lily as a bridesmaid, because she was tired of being overshadowed.” Petunia’s actions somehow even get worse the more you read on.
The addition also explained that Petunia didn’t even go to Lily and James’ wedding. The last time the sister’s spoke before Lily’s untimely death was to announce that Harry had been born.
The scene when Aunt Petunia leaves Harry could have been a tender moment for the character but instead it highlighted Petunia’s selfishness and self-obsessed nature once again.
Rowling talks about when “she said goodbye to Harry for the last time,” that Rowling insisted that she “behave in a way that is most consistent with her thoughts and feelings throughout the previous seven books.”
You will have to do some interactive detective work on the site to access the new content, we won’t ruin it for you but you should checkout the Harry’s old home under the stairs a little.
