The long-awaited sequel to the 1996 summer hit ‘Independence Day’ now has an official title. FOX announced that the film will be released under the name “Independence Day: Resurgence” and the studio released the photo (shown above) from the set.
Roland Emmerich, who directed the first film will also be the director for the follow-up installment. The film has a pretty stellar cast including Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher.
Joining them on screen will also Maika Monroe, Judd Hirsch, Sela Ward and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Don’t worry, President Thomas J. Whitmore (played by Bill Pullman) will also be coming back for the sequel.
20th Century FOX is the studio releasing the film and they have set a June 24, 2016 release date for theaters. The first was released on July 3rd, for obvious reasons but the sequel will return one-month priour.
The team behind the camera includes Dean Devlin, who produced the original film. Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser are also onboard as producers for the film with Ute Emmerich as the executive producer.
The studio hasn’t released all of the details surrounding the plot of the film but we do know that Earth has unified its nations to create a planetary defense operation. This defensive-pact will be put to the test as an alien force attacks the planet once again.
As long as Pullman gets to make another heroic speech in front of a crowd, we will be happy with the outcome of the interplanetary war.
