This week Universal Pictures released the first trailer for the new ‘Jem and the Holograms’ film, the project is based on the once-popular 1980s animated TV series. How ‘truly outrageous’ you believe the trailer to be probably has a lot to do on where you stand with sparkle, or at least with pop-punk.
The film isn’t a direct reboot, much of the storyline has been re-written to appeal to a younger audience, that more likely than not, has never heard of Jem or her secret identity. Molly Ringwald also stars in the film, if you need more of an 80s throwback for the older moms and dads out there, she will be featured as the mother-hen to Jem and the Holograms.
Jerrica Benton is being played by Aubrey Peeples, joining her will be sister Kimber (Stefanie Scott) and their foster sisters Aja (Hayley Kiyoko) and Shana (Aurora Perrineau). The film version has the group being found through YouTube by record executive Erica Raymond (played by Juliette Lewis). Through the company’s rebranding, the group becomes “Jem and the Holograms” and soon after they are discovered, the plot gets even weirder, just like the animated series did back in the early 1980s.
The film was directed by Jon M. Chu, working on a script written by Ryan Landels. Fans still have a few months of waiting before the film hits theaters, “Jem and the Holograms” are set to premiere on October 23, 2015.
