For younger viewers, it may be hard to imagine watching a FOX show and not see commercials for ‘American Idol’ every fifteen to twenty minutes, but that is what is going to happen. FOX will be killing-off the long-running reality competition that spurned rival series like ‘The Voice’ and ‘America’s Got Talent.’

The upcoming fifteenth season of ‘American Idol’ will be the last season, that was the announcement that FOX had waiting for the press earlier today. The show’s current judges, including Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr., will be on-hand to see the show off next season. Perma-host Ryan Seacrest will be saying goodbye to the show as well and will be coming back for the final season as well.

In the past Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul helped take the show to astonishing heights, but the show’s ratings have continued to slip from year-to-year. Although there have been fifteen winners of the reality series, few have reached the success of the early winners like Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood.

The show has been a better vehicle for celebrities looking to boost their own name, with stars like Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Ellen DeGeneres stopping by to guest-host or mentor contestants throughout the years. More information on the final season will be announced later this year, and you can bet that FOX will have a year’s worth of marketing and promotions for the show’s final season ready for viewers to take-in as the show comes to a close.
