Disney continues to mount an amazing cast for the studio’s live-action film adaptation of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ this time adding Sir Ian McKellen to the cast as Cogsworth. The film has already cast former Harry Potter star, Emma Watson, as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. If you need a reminder, Cogsworth was the loyal butler that was changed into a clock after the Beast angered a witch.
Ian McKellen is also promoting his latest film ‘Mr. Holmes,’ in which he plays the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, at the end of his career with one more mystery sill leading him on. That film is set to release on July 17, 2015 here in the United States. Joining Watson, Stevens and McKellen in ‘Beauty and the Beast’ on screen are Luke Evans as Gaston and Josh Gad has his sidekick LeFou. Variety was the first to announce McKellen’s casting in the film.
The film is being directed by Bill Condon, the script for the film was first written by Evan Spiliotopoulos and then a rewrite was done by Stephen Chbosky. Producing the film are David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Other castings include Kevin Kline as Belle’s father Maurice and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts. It has also been reported that Audra McDonald will play the role of Madame de la Grande Bouche (Garderobe). A few cast-members are yet to be named, Lumiere for example. The film is set to begin production by the end of 2015. The film itself is set to release on March 17, 2017.
This is just one of the many live-action films that Disney has planned over the next decade. Other former Disney classics that are getting the live-action treatment are “Mulan,” “Winnie the Pooh,” “Dumbo,” “Pinocchio,” and “The Jungle Book.”
The additional castings and hopefully a teaser-trailer or two will be releases as the film moves along into production this year.
