There weren’t too many surprises this weekend at the domestic box-office, with many of the major studios avoiding a clash with this springs’ biggest high-octane blockbuster. It was Universal’s latest Fast & Furious installment that took the box-office by storm this weekend, taking-in over $143M across the country in the film’s premiere weekend. The film, starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson, was directed by James Wan and was written by Chris Morgan and Gary Scott Thompson. This marks the seventh installment to the popular franchise, and one of the most successful to-date.
Taking second-place this weekend was ‘Home’ from 20th Century Fox. The film earned $27.4M over the weekend and stars the voice talents of Jim Parsons, Rihanna and Steve Martin. Buddy comedy ‘Get Hard’ from Warner Bros. landed in third-place this weekend with $12.9M across the country. That film stars Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. Directing the film was Etan Cohen, working off a screenplay written by Jay Martel and Ian Roberts.
In fourth place was the latest Disney live-adaptation ‘Cinderella,’ adding $10.3M to the film’s domestic total. The fairy-tale adaptation stars Lily James, Cate Blanchett and Richard Madden. Chris Weitz wrote the screenplay for the new film. which was directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Action-sequel ‘Insurgent’ from the popular ‘Divergent’ series ended-up in fifth-place this week. The film, from Lionsgate, earned $10.0M over the weekend. The latest installment stars Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Theo James and was directed by Robert Schwentke.
Horror-film ‘It Follows’ from Radius brought-in another $2.5M after expanding to over 1,000 theaters this month. ‘Woman In Gold’ from The Weinstein Company earned $2.0M over the weekend, that film stars Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds and Daniel Brühl. In ninth-place this weekend was ‘Do You Believe?’ from Pure Flix. The film saw a $1.5M gain across the country and stars Mira Sorvino, Sean Astin and Alexa PenaVega.
