All three major studio releases found themselves in the top-five at the box-office this weekend. Leading the box-office at number one was the 20th Century Fox animated film ‘Home’ with $54M. The film opened this weekend with an impressive cast including Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin and Jennifer Lopez. Tim Johnson directed the family-focused film, working off a screenplay written by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember. The characters were based off the book ‘The True Meaning of Smekday’ written by Adam Rex.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ latest release ‘Get Hard’ took second place with $34M domestically over its opening weekend across the country. The film stars Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart in a buddy comedy that involves Hart’s character teaching Ferrell’s character how to survive in prison before his sentence begins. Also appearing in the film are Alison Brie, Craig T. Nelson and John Mayer. The film was directed by Etan Cohen, working off a screenplay written by Jay Martel and Ian Roberts.
Third-place went to last week’s box-office winner, ‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent.’ The highly-anticipated sequel film earner another $22M across the country over the weekend. Lionsgate’s latest installment to the popular YA series now sits at $86M domestically. The film stars Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and Theo James and was directed by Robert Schwentke.
Landing at fourth-place this week was Disney’s latest live-action film ‘Cinderella,’ the film earned another $17.5M over the weekend, raising the domestic total to just over $150M.
Rounding out the top-five was the recently expanded thriller-horror ‘It Follows’ from Radius. The film brought in another $4M after recently expanding from its limited release. The film comes from writer/director David Robert Mitchell and stars Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist and Olivia Luccardi. The story involves a young woman, who after a sexual confrontation, is followed by an unknown force.
