Christian Slater’s upcoming ‘Mr. Robot’ series a hit at SXSW
Currently Christian Slater is killing it as ‘Slater’ on FX’s popular animated-series ‘Archer,’ but the actor has a new show ready to debut this summer that’s already making headlines. Last week at the SXSW Film Festival, the show won the audience award in the Episodics category. The network premiered the pilot last Tuesday, March 17 in front of a packed crowd in the Vimeo Theater. Following the screening there was a short Q&A with creator Sam Esmail, as well as with Christian Slater, Rami Malek, Portia Doubleday and Carly Chaikin.
The new series ‘MR. ROBOT’ is scheduled to premiere in June on USA Network, and follows Elliot (Malek, “24”), a young programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and as a vigilante hacker by night. Soon Elliot finds himself at a crossroads when the mysterious leader (Slater, “Adderall Diaries”) of an underground hacker group recruits him to destroy the firm he is paid to protect. Compelled by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs he believes are running (and ruining) the world. The series also stars Doubleday (“Her”), Chaikin (“Suburgatory”) and Wallström (“Simple Simon”).
From Universal Cable Productions, this contemporary and culturally resonant drama is executive produced by Esmail and Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin (“True Detective”) and Chad Hamilton (“Breakup at a Wedding”).
As for Christian Slater’s additional projects, the actor will be starring in ‘The Adderall Diaries’ with Amber Heard, James Franco and Ed Harris. The film was directed by Pamela Romanowsky and based on the memoir written by Stephen Elliott. Pamela Romanowsky wrote the screenplay to the film. Slater will also star in the 2016 drama ‘The Wife.’ That film is from director Björn Runge, working off a screenplay written by Jane Anderson and based on the novel written by Meg Wolitzer. Joining Slater in that film are Logan Lerman and Brit Marling.
