Shailene Woodley on Edward Snowden, ‘epitome of the word selfless’
Later this year “Snowden,” a new documentary directed by Oliver Stone, will release in theaters across the nation. The film has a trio of famous stars leading its cast, including Shailene Woodley, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scott Eastwood. Just like the previous Oliver Stone films before it, the project is already making headlines well before its official release in theaters.
Shailene Woodley will be playing the role of Edward Snowden’s girlfriend in the documentary, and when the actor sat down with E! to talk about her new film ‘Insurgent,’ she also spoke about her upcoming ‘Snowden’ project. During the interview Woodley called Edward Snowden “a hero,” and as many people across the world agree with her sentiment, there are still many people that do not. Woodley said if she could meet the real Snowden she would tell him, “You are the epitome of the word selfless … So I would like [to] say thank you.” The popular actor and Golden Globe nominee also stated, “I think that Edward Snowden is a hero.”
With Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Snowden in the documentary, Woodley is taking on the role of girlfriend Lindsay Mills. It was just last week that the studio released the first still from the film on social-media, showing a younger Edward Snowden in his early days as a soldier in the U.S. military. Joining Eastwood, Woodley and Gordon-Levitt on-screen are Zachary Quinto, Nicolas Cage and Timothy Olyphant. Kieran Fitzgerald wrote the screenplay for the film.
The actual Edward Snowden is still living in Moscow, while the actual Lindsay Mills is still free to remain in the United States. You may not have recognized her, but she did take the stage last month at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Mills was on stage when ‘Citizenfour’ won Best Documentary.
‘Snowden’ is scheduled to release in theaters on December 25, 2015, Shailene Woodley’s next film ‘Insurgent’ is set to release in theaters later this month on March 20, 2015.
