Oliver Stone is currently hard at work on his next film, a biopic on the life of former Nation Security Agency worker Edward Snowden. Playing the titular-role in the film, called “Snowden,” is Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the studio released the first still from the project earlier today. Fans of the actor, or its high-profile director, still have a long wait before the film’s official release; the film itself is set to hit theaters at the end of this this year.
Snowden of course is the former NSA whistleblower that leaked classified documents from the top-secret agency in order to expose a government spying program aimed at civilians around the world. Open Road Films is the studio behind the project, “Snowden” is scheduled to release in theaters on December 25, 2015. The production schedule for the film will have the cast and crew jetting-off to several locations around the world, they are currently shooting in Munich.
The actual Edward Snowden is currently living in Russia, thanks to a political asylum granted by the country. Depending on where you stand on the topic, you will most likely see Snowden as a whistleblower that helped to expose a series of unconstitutional policies that our government was undertaking in secret, or as a traitor to hos country. The picture shows Snowden in uniform, an interesting choice, since many would-be moviegoers may not know that Snowden was a service-member before his work with the NSA.
Oliver Stone is directing the film, based off a screenplay written by Kieran Fitzgerald. Joining Snowden on-screen are Shailene Woodley, Scott Eastwood and Nicolas Cage. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was recently in “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” and has several major projects in the works. Gordon-Levitt also recently wrapped “The Walk,” a film in which he played the role of Philippe Petit, the French high-wire artist that attempted to cross the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center back in 1974.
