Leonardo DiCaprio is taking on a new role as trapper Hugh Glass in ‘The Revenant,’ expected to hit theaters later this year. Fighting to survive the brutal American wilderness, DiCaprio’s character is injured and left for dead by a traitorous member of his team. The gritty film is actually based on a novel that was just released earlier this month, and the studio has released the first images from the film just this week (shown above).

That former team-member is character John Fitzgerald (played by Tom Hardy). The film will follow Glass as he battles the elements with almost nothing to protect himself against the wild animals or migrating Native American tribes that dot the landscape. Glass’ quest begins with the hope for vengeance, as he tracks down Fitzgerald across the terrain.

The film is actually based on a true story, based on a novel written by Michael Punke called ‘The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge‘. That novel was only just released on January 6, 2015, and is available if you would like to read the book before seeing the film.

The project itself has some marvelous talent behind the camera as well. Directing ‘The Revenant’ is Alejandro González Iñárritu (“Birdman,” “Babel”) who also co-wrote the film. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ‘Birdman’ is a front-runner for the Oscar’s this year, and following up the success of the film with a Dicaprio picture is probably a pretty safe bet for the screenwriter.

DiCaprio is coming off his widely-praised role of Jordan Belfort in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and will also appear in “Mean Business on North Ganson Street” and “The Audition.” Though those films are still in their very early pre-production stages at this time. More information on those projects will be announced later this year as the appropriate studios move farther along in production.

The film will see a limited release in select markets on December 25, 2015 but it is scheduled for a wider-release starting on January 8, 2016.
