Disney’s Into the Woods earns $8.1 million on New Years, nearing $75 million in a week
Walt Disney Pictures has another hit on their hands, and this time it isn’t an animated feature. The latest musical released by the studio pulled in another $8.1 million dollars on New Year’s alone, finishing it’s eighth-day in theaters with a $72.2 million total.
The film released on Christmas Day to a swarm of movie-goers anxiously awaiting to see the terrific cast in action. On opening-day the film earned an estimated $15.1 million dollars. That $72 million-dollar total still has a lot of catching up to do, but will most likely earn the top-spot at the box-office this weekend. Last week’s winner was ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,’ which opened a week earlier than Into the Woods on December 17, 2015 and has already earned roughly $169 million domestically by the end of last weekend.
Disney’s success has a lot to do with the cast signed to the film including stars Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp, James Corden and Emily Blunt to name a few of the major stars in the film. Directing the film-adaptation was Rob Marshall, based on a screenplay written by James Lapine.
Disney is also prepping it’s next major live-action film adaptation for release, ‘Cinderella,’ which is set to hit theaters on March 13, 2015. That film stars Lily James, Helena Bonham Carter and Cate Blanchett in a retelling of the classic fairytale.
