Audiences flock to Nightcrawler and Ouija on Halloween weekend

It was almost a perfect split at the box-office this weekend as ‘Nightcrawler’ and ‘Oujia’ battled each other for the number-one spot in theaters across the country. It wouldn’t be a proper Halloween without a horror-film in the top-three at the box-office, and this weekend’s ‘Ouija’ earned the top-spot in its genre. The popular horror film couldn’t take the number-one spot however, that honor went the Open Road film ‘Nightcrawler,’ starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo and Bill Paxton. The film follows Lou Bloom (Gyllenhaal), as a desperate man that muscles into the world of L.A. crime journalism. The film was directed by Dan Gilroy, who also wrote the script. The film brought in just under $11 million ($10,909,000)in its opening weekend across the country.

‘Ouija’ dropped to number two this week (just barely) also with $11 million ($10,900,240) at the box-office. The film now has earned just shy of $35 million domestically. Sony’s WWII tank-drama ‘Fury,’ starring Brad Pitt, is now number-three in theaters. That film took-in another $9 million this weekend, bringing the film’s domestic total to $60.4 million. At number four is the still popular film adaptation of ‘Gone Girl’ from 20th Century Fox. The film earned another $8.8 million over the weekend passing the $135 million mark to-date.

Finishing the top-five is the animated tale ‘The Book Of Life,’ also from 20th Century Fox. That film earned $8.3 million this weekend, pushing the film’s total to $40.5 million domestically.
