Iggy Azalea and Katy Perry, several stars battle for most American Music Award wins

Earlier today the 2014 American Music Award nominations were announced, and a trio of popular performers will be battling it out for the most wins this year. Australian rapper Iggy Azalea sits atop the ‘Fancy’ throne with six nominations, she is also nominated for Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year, and Single of the Year.

In second place, ‘Roar’ Queen Katy Perry sits with five nominations. She shares second place with Pharrell Williams and John Legend. Not to be forgotten, Lorde took third place this year with four nominations overall.

The American Music Awards is based entirely on fan voting, so backstage politics won’t be as important as marketing and artists’ social-media campaigns to secure votes in this contest. A few categories are expanding this year, including the Artist of the Year nomination, which has jumped from five artists to ten artist battling it out for most popular overall. The nominations cross genres as well, from Iggy to country artists like Luke Bryan, but also includes such regulars as Beyonce and One Direction.

Single of the Year stepped-up its game as well this year, moving from just three nominees to five nominations. The American Music Awards will premiere on November 23 in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on ABC.
