Much like the vampires that take center-stage in the popular YA novels, ‘Twilight’ will live forever. A new project from Lionsgate will resurrect and continue the love-story of Bella and Edward, the two-teens from the Twilight saga, as they continue their lives together on social media. The project is a joint venture from Lionsgate and the original series creator, author Stephenie Meyer, it will allow a series of short films to hit Facebook in 2015. This according to the brief announcement that was confirmed late Tuesday.
The new films will have a strong female-showing, the company will pick five aspiring female film directors, all chosen from a group of female panelists. One of those panelists will be none other than Kristen Stewart herself. “We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of Twilight to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans,” Michael Burns, Lionsgate’s vice chairman, told the NY Times.
As a business-model it’s a unique spin on fan-focused film releases, using Facebook’s ever-growing userbase to share the film and build up marketing while costing close to nothing, a terrific alternative for the studio that can skip-over cinema tickets or VOD sales. More information on how to enter, deadlines and content will be released at a later date.
