Sony’s latest thriller ‘The Equalizer,’ took the box-office this weekend. The film earned an estimated $35 million in its first weekend across the nation, beating out the ‘The Maze Runner,’ which took in $17.5 million.
‘The Equalizer’ stars Denzel Washington as a man that believes he has put his past behind him and has dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by – he has to help her. Joining Washington on-screen are Marton Csokas and Chloe Grace Moretz. The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua.
In third place and also in its first weekend was Focus Features’ family-film ‘The Boxtrolls.’ That film saw an impressive opening with $17.3 million domestically. Finishing out the top-five this week were two films from Warner Bros. Pictures. Those films were ‘This Is Where I Leave You’ at number four with $7 million, and ‘Dolphin Tale 2’ with $4.8 million.
