Michael Che to replace Cecily Strong on “Weekend Update” SNL change
There will be new changes in place when SNL returns with Chris Pratt later this month. Actor, comedian and writer Michael Che will be replacing the popular Cecily Strong at the “Weekend Update” anchor desk.
NBC confirmed the move earlier this week, while “Saturday Night Live” is set to return in just a few weeks for the show’s 40th season. As for Che, he will be the new co-anchor with Colin Jost. Jost and Strong were both co-anchors who began their Weekend Update run last year.
The original move that put Strong and Jost together was when “SNL” writer Seth Meyers took his new job as “Late Night” host back in February. Strong isn’t leaving the “SNL” cast, simply being moved out of the best spots anyone on the show could have.
“This is about a new era, what feels appropriate for now,” Michaels told the NYT this week. “That’s why we did a lot of combinations and tests, and this is kind of where we came out.”
The new season of “SNL” bows Sept. 27 with Chris Pratt hosting and musical guest Ariana Grande.
