Earlier today Oscar-winning director and beloved actor Richard Attenborough past away at the age of 90. It was the actor’s son, Michael Attenborough, who confirmed the news of his father’s passing with the BBC.

According to Michael’s statement, his father died on Sunday, he had apparently been in poor health for quite some time and is now at peace. Earlier this evening Prime Minister David Cameron issued a statement: “His acting in ‘Brighton Rock’ was brilliant, his directing of ‘Gandhi’ was stunning,” Cameron said simply.

That was the film in which Attenborough won an Academy Award for best director, “Gandhi” was released back in 1982. Steven Spielberg released the following statement upon the passing of Richard Attenborough, many Americans may remember Attenborough from his terrific performance in Jurassic Park, where he worked closely with Spielberg.

Said Steven Spielberg, “Dickie Attenborough was passionate about everything in his life – family, friends, country and career. He made a gift to the world with his emotional epic ‘Gandhi’ and he was the perfect ringmaster to bring the dinosaurs back to life as John Hammond in ‘Jurassic Park.’ He was a dear friend and I am standing in an endless line of those who completely adored him.”
