Guardians Of The Galaxy nears a $100 million opening weekend
We already knew that Disney had great faith in its latest Marvel film ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy,’ the studio confirmed a sequel even before the original film released in theaters, but few could have anticipated just how successful the film would be in just first the weekend in theaters.
The film, from Marvel and Walt Disney Studios, hit $94 million in its opening weekend according to estimates, and that is just the domestic box-office totals. The film is an amazing success right off the bat, set to take the number spot in August for an all-time record Hollywood, and already taking the number-one spot on a Thursday release.
Lucy from Universal Pictures took the number two spot this week with $18 million across the nation, that film now climbs to $79.5 overall. At number three is Get On Up, also from Universal, with just over $14 million in that film’s opening weekend as well.
Dropping from number-two to number-four is Hercules from Paramount pictures, taking-in $10.7 million and landing with a $52 million two-week gain.
That leaves Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes from 20th Century Fox at number five, the film brought in another $8.7 million this week, creating a running domestic total of just over $189 million overall.
