This weekend wasn’t much of a competition at the box-office as Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Lucy’ took in an impressive $44 million domestically in its opening weekend. You can compare that to Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Hercules’ which took in $29 million across the nation, also in its opening weekend.
Those two film bumped ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ down to third place, though the film still took in $16.4 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to just over $172 million domestically.
At number four this week is ‘Purge: Anarchy,’ bringing in almost $10 million with a growing total of $51 million, proving that once again, horror-thrillers have a strong home at the summer box-office (at least for lower-production cost thrillers). Rounding out the top-five is ‘Planes: Fire and Rescue’ from Disney with $9 million growing to $35 million so far in the United States.
