Pacific Rim 2 will rise out of the Sequel abyss in 2017, Guillermo del Toro to direct
The original film may not have broken any box-office summer records, but it was a successful introduction to the series by any standards; now Universal Pictures has confirmed that the follow up to ‘Pacific Rim’ will launch in 2017. The project was just confirmed today, no casting or a title was given at this point.
The first film took in just about $100 million here in the states, but brought in over $400 million globally. Universal is hoping to turn this film from ‘one-shot action-hit’, to series franchise by setting a 2017 date for the next film.
Fans of the original Pacific Rim should be very happy to hear that Guillermo del Toro will return as the project’s director, the film will remain as part of Legendary Pictures and the new script will come from Zak Penn and Del Torro himself.
The official date for the larger-than-life robotic beatdown to occur will be April 7, 2017. Producing the second film will be Del Toro, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. It will be Jillian Share that will take the lead as executive producer.
The first film picked up as giant sea creatures faced-off against mankind’s giant robot defense-avatars, all in a showdown towards the apocalypse. The first film starred Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi but it is unclear who will return (if anyone) at this point.
