Looper director Rian Johnson expected to helm Star Wars Episode VIII
Lucasfilm and Walt Disney pictures are close to confirming that Looper director Rian Johnson will take the director’s chair for part-two in the new Star Wars trilogy.
Johnson is in final negotiations for the role, this according to several sources in the industry. It was expected that Johnson would direct two Star Wars films, now it is being reported that Johnson will only direct Episode VIII, and will instead finish a treatment for Episode IX This will leave the final-piece of the puzzle to be directed by someone else for Episode IX.
Fans may know Johnson best from his latest work in Looper, but his previous two features include; 2005’s Brick (which took home the coveted Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival) and Brothers Bloom which released in 2008. The recently released film he directed was the 2012 hit Looper.
As all Star Wars fans know by now, J.J. Abrams is directing the first film in the trilogy, with John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow starring in the installment.
Coming back to the cast is Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.
