Fans of the popular reboot of the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ franchise starring Andrew Garfield won’t be seeing Shailene Woodley when the third film releases next year.
Woodley was expected to appear as Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but ultimately her scenes were cut for time and to focus on the relationship of Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield.
Marc Webb spoke about the decision to cut the scenes saying that it was, “very difficult to introduce someone as a competing love interest when so much is on the table with Peter and Gwen.”
The latest confirmation came in the July issue of Vanity Fair. In the feature , Woodley confirmed she is out as Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
Sony has not recast Mary Jane at this point, but the studio is also expanding the franchise with more films.
Woodley stated, “For a few hours it was literally like, ‘Oh, my God, was I awful? Why did they cut me? What are people going to think?’ I woke up the next morning and I was like, ‘O.K., it makes total sense.’ I’m a pretty spiritual person, so I can just sit back and trust that everything happens for a reason, even if my ego doesn’t like it.”
The Sinister Six and Venom are two spinoffs that are planned.
