Disney to follow ‘Maleficent’ success with live-action ‘Beauty and the Beast’
Walt Disney Studios will be releasing a wide-array of live-action films over the next few years, a trend that proved to be worth exploring with the success of the Angelina Jolie film ‘Maleficent,’ opening to almost $175 million last weekend. Also in the works are a live-action ‘Cinderella,’ ‘Into the Woods,’ another ‘Alice in Wonderland’ the ‘Jungle Book’. You can also add a live-action ‘Beauty and the Beast’ to your list of must-see movies.
Earlier this evening Disney confirmed that Bill Condon will direct the live-action telling of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” The script will come from the talented Evan Spiliotopoulos, though it is unclear if it will be a prequel like ‘Maleficent,’ a retelling like ‘Cinderella,’ or something completely different altogether.
“Beauty and the Beast” was at one time the most-successful film Disney had in its arsenal, with over $370 million earned worldwid, and honored with a best picture Oscar-nomination back in 1995. Jon Favreau is directing the before mentioned ‘Jungle Book’ film, while “Cinderella,” will be under Kenneth Branagh.
