Disney’s Maleficent hits $70 million in opening weekend, ‘Million Ways to Die,’ comes up short

Taking the top-spot at the box-office this weekend was Walt Disney Studios’ prequel to ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning. The new live-action film ‘Maleficent’ is estimated to bring in $70 million domestically, while taking home over $100 million internationally in the film’s weekend-debut.

In its second weekend in theaters ‘X-MEN Days of Future Past’ added another $32.6 million to FOX’s treasure-chests, bringing the film’s total to just over $162 million to-date (domestically). Also opening this weekend was the new Seth MacFarlane comedy ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ which, despite having a very impressive lineup of cast-members, only managed to take third-place with $17 million.

Dropping out of the top-three was Warner Bros. Pictures’ ‘Godzilla’ installment, the film has been a smashing success for the studio, adding another $12 million dollars over the past weekend and easily passing $300 million internationally. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore couldn’t save ‘Blended,’ also from Warner Bros. Pictures, as it continues to fade off the charts. This time the film is expected to take fifth-place overall and only adding $8 million in ticket-sales this weekend, bringing the domestic total to just under $30 million.
