Quick to sign, Oprah Winfrey grabs Michael Sam documentary for OWN
Just days after Michael Sam was drafted during the highly publicized NFL draft this week, Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network has confirmed that it will air a new documentary about the first openly-gay NFL player. OWN made the announcement earlier today (Wednesday) the docuseries will follow Michael Sam when he starts his new career with National Football League’s St. Louis Rams team.
The crew putting together the series is the same team that launched the Lindsay Lohan series “Lindsay,” though this subject may raise fewer eyebrows than their previous choice did.
“Like every player out there working to make a team right now, my focus is on playing football to the very best of my ability,” said Sam. “I am determined. And if seeing my story helps somebody else accept who they are and to go for their dreams too, that’s great. I am thankful to Oprah for her support and excited to work together.”
It was back in February that Sam came-out openly, but was only drafted to the Rams this week on May 10.
“We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever,” said Winfrey. “The next real-life story we follow in The Untitled Michael Sam Project promises to spark valuable, important discussion on life in America today. Acceptance and illumination start here.”
