Nvidia celebrates a cakeday of their very own as Portal heads to Nvidia SHIELD

It’s been an interesting week for me as far as cake is concerned, but I’ll be happy to explain it. Earlier this year, in March, during the GPU Technology Conference, Nvidia announced that the massively popular game ‘Portal,’ would be making its way to the Nvidia SHIELD. While this may not sound like a big deal to some (after all, you can simply stream Portal from your PC to the SHIELD), this simple announcement also means that Portal will be receiving an official Android port, meaning even more people can enjoy the brilliant game. The company also used the event to announce that game-streaming will be moving out of the house, and be available over the internet. At the time there wasn’t a release date, and now things seem to be moving along nicely.

Fast forward a few weeks and I come home from picking up my kids to find a box waiting for me. Inside my mystery box was one lovely cake from Nvidia, part of an inside joke to everyone that has played the original ‘Portal’ game. Accompanied with the cake was a note from Aperture Laboratories.

My first thought was “…….GlaDOS,” then my two year old daughter saw the cake. To make a long story short, the cake was from the good folks at Nvidia, announcing that Portal will be coming to Android very soon (review to come), then I spent the next half-hour cleaning chocolate out of my daughter’s hair. On a side note, my wife was finally impressed with one of the perks of my job.

The full note from Aperture read as follows:

“If you received this cake, you, Tony Hsieh, have passed the initial evaluation process! As part of our responsive personality testing, we would like to see how you react to positive reinforcement. Please enjoy this delicious cake and fire up your NVIDIA SHIELD to continue on to the next Test Chamber. Let’s see how well you jump over vats of acid with a belly full of chocolate!

We have your brain scanned and permanently backed up in case something terrible happens to you. but, if you have any questions prior to beginning your advanced testing routine, please email____________.

*Please note that we have added a consequence for failure. Any contact with the chamber floor will result in an “unsatisfactory” mark on your official testing record, followed by death. Good luck!* “

This was the aftermath of the cake meeting my family:

More information on the availability of Portal, and other announcements on the popular NVIDIA Shield will be announced over the next weeks.
