Skype goes after Google Hangouts with free group video-chat
A little competition is also good for the consumer, and the latest battle between video-call services has Skype dropping the paywall for group video chats. Microsoft announced earlier today that group-videos will now fall into the ‘free Skype’ range, but only for desktop and Xbox One consoles at this point.
In years past if users wanted to use the service they would have to be premium subscribers, but now it is free and available starting today. If you use video-chatting on mobile devices, then you will have to wait. Microsoft did make it a point to say that an update to include those platforms is coming “in the near future.” In a statement on the company’s official blog Skype stated, “As we move forward, we’ll continue to listen to your feedback and deliver ever more and ever better group communications. So, as always, let us know what you think by keeping in touch on Twitter and Facebook, and join us on the Skype Community.”
