M.I.A. leaves Jay Z, moves from Roc Nation and is looking for suitors

Last year wasn’t one of M.I.A.’s easiest, the musician has been struggling with her previous music-label and its producers back when she was trying to release her latest album “Matangi”. A documentary on the singer was also delayed, and eventually pulled adding more friction to the growing divide. Now the artist is starting off 2014 by leaving Jay Z’s Roc Nation Label and moving on to something that will apparently give her a little more control over her music.

MIA-InsertThe news came on New Year’s Eve after being with Roc Nation for about a year (M.I.A. joined Roc Nation in 2012) and was announced on Twitter.

M.I.A. stated in a past interview that the friction came from the album’s upbeat and positive nature. “At the moment, I’ve been told it’s too positive,” she said. “So we’re having a bit of an issue at the label. They’re like, ‘You need to darken it up a bit.’ … It’s like, ‘We just built you up as the public enemy No. 1 and now you’re coming out with all this positive stuff.'” It’s an odd battle to have to fight, but nothing that is incoming in the industry.

Where M.I.A. will end up is still unknown, but the popular artist shouldn’t have any trouble finding a studio that will be happy to add her to the fold.
