Disney’s Frozen opens strong, Hunger Games Catching Fire leading the pack

The Hunger Games Catching Fire is the early favorite for the Thanksgiving weekend crown. The film has an estimated $85 million in ticket sales so far this week, only narrowly beating out Disney’s latest animated feature.

Catching Fire earned slightly above$20 million Wednesday, according to the studios estimates, bringing the domestic total to just over $206 million in six days. This gives Catching Fire another title, taking the sixth spot in the fastest film to surpass $200 million. It sits behind “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “The Dark Knight Rises”.

Disney’s animated feature also started strong, thanks to favorable early reviews, the film opened on Wednesday with slightly over $15 million in ticket sales. According to estimates the film is set to earn up to $80 million dollars this weekend alone.

With two giants taking up that much retail in the theaters, it comes at the cost of other films opening at the same time. “Homefront” also opened Wednesday to $1.4 million, it only opened in 2,570 locations however, so it was a strong start for the film.

“Oldboy,” is still taking the plunge, earning just over $2 Million over its five-day run. You can expect that to be pulled at any moment.
