Scarlett Johansson snubbed of Golden Globe Nomination on Technicality
If you saw Scarlett Johansson’s performance in ‘Her’ with Joaquin Pheonix you may have thought that it was deserving of an award, you wouldn’t be alone. Industry sites and on-air personalities have been questioning which awards would honor the actress for her performance, but it looks like the Golden Globes won’t be one of them.
According to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Scarlett Johansson’s vocal performance does not meet the requirements to be nominated for a best supporting actress nomination. To clarify, Scarlett Johansson plays the voice of an artificial intelligence being with the name “Samantha”. This virtual character is the co-star of the movie (and the love interest of star Joaquin Pheonix). Since she is an “AI” in the movie, she doesn’t appear in the movie in Johansson’s physical nature.
Warner Bros. itself (the distributer of the film) appealed to the Foreign Press to include Johansson’s performance, but to no avail. It should be noted that both the Oscars and the SAG Awards will allow Johansson’s nomination for her performance.
