Universal moves 50 Shades of Grey to Valentine’s Day in 2015
It looks like Universal will making Valentine’s Day a little sexier this year, the studio has confirmed that they have altered the releases date of the highly-anticipated film-adaptation of ’50 Shades of Grey’ to the romantic holiday.
The film was originally scheduled for a summer 2015 release date, though it looks like summer would have been too hot for the film’s release, and a cooler month was chosen for the erotic tale of the two lovebirds. The real reason was competition though, summer is a tough month for movies that aren’t filled with Superheroes, Teen Comedians, or robots. This summer 50 Shades would have had to go against ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ starring Chris Pratt and Benicio del Toro, making the chances for the film to hit #1 all but impossible. The news broke via EW’s cover story this morning (Wednesday).
The film was already hit with delays, filming in Vancouver was pushed back a few weeks after leading man Jamie Dornan was chosen to play Christian Grey. “Together with the international marketing and distribution team, we’ve been looking really closely at the August date and becoming more and more convinced that the right thing to do for the movie was to push it,” Langley says. “So even if Charlie had stayed, we still would have been making the date change.”
