Whether you were a fan of Glee or not, the events surrounding the death of star Cory Monteith were a tragic end to a hopeful actor. It can be hard for a show to properly say goodbye to a character when events like this occur, but FOX and the Glee cast are taking in stride, and provided several touching moments to honor Monteith’s memory and celebrate his work with his fans.
In next week’s episode, Finn Hudson will die. This just days after the official coroner’s report ruled that 31-year-old Cory Monteith passed-away after overdosing on heroin and alcohol this past July. The trailer above was released to prepare fans for the episode, and to remember Cory. The video shows many of the McKinley High cast coping with the tragic news. Monteith’s girlfriend (on the show and off the screen) Lea Michele, is shown crying after hearing the news.
Though scripted, you can imagine the sheer agony of having to relive the events, the phone calls, sharing the news, and the heartache that these kids faced that day. Even if this time it’s for a fictional character. It will be one of the hardest, and most likely the most honest portrayals on screen that they will ever have to do.
When Michele won at the Teen Choice Awards this year, she stated, “He was very special to me and also to the world and we were very lucky to witness his incredible talent, his handsome smile and his beautiful, beautiful heart.” She added, “So whether you knew him personally or just as Finn Hudson, Cory reached out and he became a part of all of our hearts, and that’s where he’ll stay forever.”
As I said, wrapping up a missing character can be hard for a series and not everyone will agree on adding the death into the script. How it will play out among the fans, media and industry, will unfold next week.
