Few can argue that John Oliver’s stock skyrocketed after he took over ‘The Daily Show’ for Jon Stewart this past summer. Now that the British comedian is on top of the world, it only makes sense to bring back his character, Professor Ian Duncan, to the NBC comedy ‘Community’.
As of right now Oliver will appear in at least six of the upcoming season’s episodes. Sony Television made the confirmation earlier today. Fans of the series might remember that Oliver appeared on both season 1 and season 2, but then just disappeared from campus.
The character of Ian Dunkin has a connection to Jeff (Joel McHale) in that he was once Jeff’s client, this is of course before Jeff was stripped of his job and sent to community college to get a real degree. Ian teaches psychology at Greendale Community College, where the show takes place.
You might think that the show is getting larger, but in fact the cast is still shrinking. Chevy Chase (Pierce), left the series during Season 4 after on-set drama reached its boiling point. Funnyman Donald Glover will also have a reduced role as he takes on other projects. He will only appear in a handful of episodes in season 5.
Of course all of this is after Dan Harmon was fired after season three, then brought back for season 5. The show may be about college, but the set seems to be more high-school. Not to fear, Gillian Jacobs, Joel McHale, Danny Pudi and internet darling Alison Brie will be returning.
