Tonight is the premiere of Saturday Night Live, and it’s a special night for the long-running series for several reasons. Outside of it being the beginning of the 39th season tonight, the beloved former cast member Tina Fey will be hosting the show.
Although Tina Fey might be a familiar face, there won’t be too many other faces that you will recognize from former seasons. There was another mass exodus of SNL last year, a common situation when a familiar team begins to break-up. It’s all part of the show, and the series will continue on just as it has in the past.
There will be six new cast members this year, all starting tonight, and all picked the man in charge himself, Lorne Michaels. That’s not the only major change, the most coveted position on SNL also received a cast makeover this year. Cecily Strong will assume her new role as anchor on “Weekend Update” tonight. This change was brought about when Seth Meyers agreed to take the NBC Late Night show from Jimmy Fallon, who is moving to the Tonight Show.
“Weekend Update” is the most sought after role on the series for several reasons, the main reason of course is that is a permanent placement in the lineup every week for whoever holds the desk. The segment also boasts some of the best sketches and writers to back it up.
Tonight you will meet Beck Bennett, Brooks Wheelan, Noel Wells, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney and Mike O’Brien, all starting their first show later tonight.
