The complete recap of Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Panel from Comic Con

Ubisoft was more than prepared to show off their next installment to the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ franchise at this year’s Comic Con 2013. The company came equipped with voice-talent from the game, the creators and an actual ship from the game ‘Jackdaw’. The company announced a new comic with a new Lead Character, a new collectable statue, and had tons of insight for fans.

The panel opened with the now familiar E3 2013 trailer that Ubisoft had ready in June. The panel hosted the voice-cast from the game, including lead actor Matt Ryan who talked about his character stating, “Edward is extremely self-driven, and often, that brings problems with his relationships.” He talked about one of Edward’s closest relationships as well, “Blackbeard is one of the people Edward becomes closest to throughout the game,” he said but stopped short of spoiling any details. Since the game is getting closer to the modern-age, the fear of the game turning into a ‘gun-game’ was brought up; to which Darby stated, “pistols took a long time to load, so you’ll need to use melee.”

When asked how he prepared for the role Ryan joked, “I didn’t do too much drinking in preparing for the role, honestly…,” as the crowed chuckled for a moment, then Ryan admitted, “I wish I could swing from the rigging like that in real life.”

The lead writer Darby McDevitt stated, “We spend a lot of time researching, but we start with history and then whittle away to get fun gameplay.” He later added, “We’ve been saying it’s 60/40 on land and sea, but it’s fully open-world, so you can alter that.” When asked if the new game would have the same recruitment side-mechanic that other games had Darby said, “We removed the Brotherhood in the way you’ve seen it before, because Edward is a pirate and has a crew.” A more interesting point was when Darby was aked if you could play as Hatham and he said, “Oh I can’t spoil something like that,” to which Matt added, “I can’t say anything either.”

Shown at the event was a new live-gameplay demo, this was voiced by “Edward”. It will be posted when it is officially released so stay tuned.

Also announced was a new Assassin’s Creed: Brahman comic book, it will be starring a new Assassin Arbaz Mir and will be set in India during British colonization.

Todd McFarlane was on-hand to make a few announcements, “For the first time since I’ve been making toys, we’re including rewards with each figure you can redeem in-game,” he said. McFarland then displayed a 15-inch tall Captain Edward Kenway figure with a translucent water detail.

Multiplayer fans should know that there will be exciting changes as well, Darby promised fans, “There are a bunch of things, but my favorite is the new Game Lab that lets you edit MP modes,” though no details were shared at this time. Assassin’s aren’t the only ones who have improved however since we last left them. Darby stated, “you’ll see that they’ve improved their technology. You’ll see a new Animus”.

Desmond fans we are sorry to confirm, “Desmond’s story is over,” but “the story of the Assassins goes on” promises Darby.
