Local news is usually known for being as low-budget and tacky as it known for being local. So when they get to cover something nationally, they should take a moment to work out the kinks.
On Oakland’s KTVU Channel 2, they thought they hit it big. They thought they had an exclusive on the names of the Asiana Flight 214 pilots. Instead they got a firsthand lesson on Bart-to-Moe phone pranks.
All of this happens just after the tragic news of a third person’s death was reported, that person was also involved in the San Francisco International Airport crash. Then the Fox affiliate KTVU channel’s noon newscast named four pilots: Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, and Bang Ding Ow.
If you are not in the third grade, and for some people that are in the third grade, you should notice that these names are fake. So KTVU unknowingly helps one of the most offensive pranks on its network to get out. Anchor Tori Campbell read the names without missing a beat, then said they had been confirmed by the NTSB, and moved on,
KTVU has since apologized on its website, but it STILL placed fault will the NTSB, which KTVU states confirmed the names as accurate before the broadcast. KTVU stated, “The correct names of the pilots in the cockpit were Lee Gang-guk and Lee Jeong-Min.”
