In a recent interview with the Guardian, Michael Douglas gave some frank answers when asked about his battle with throat cancer. Although the answer is a tad shocking, it is important to point out that it is actually possible for this to happen.
To recap the interview, Douglas told the paper that his throat cancer, which he was diagnosed with three years ago, was caused by oral sex. He made the remark when he was asked if the cancer made him regret smoking and drinking earlier in his life. It was at that time Douglas stated, “No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV (human papillomavirus), which actually comes about from cunnilingus.”
Douglas then stated, “But yeah, it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.” Douglas (68) is currently married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. The happy couple was married in 2000. It was later in 2010 that Douglas would be diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer.
It was on the David Letterman show on August 31, 2010, that Douglas spoke about his cancer publicly after he had undergone radiation and chemotherapy. Douglas has been living cancer-free for two years now.
