Billy Crystal is getting back into television, the famous comedian and actor will play a popular comedian who is unfortunately paired with less-than ideal late-night co-star.
FX has decided to move forward and has ordered the pilot episode of “The Comedians”, which if successful will become a half-hour comedy series. The show itself with be another single camera comedy, produced by Fox Television Studios. The show is loosely based on a Swedish series with the same name. The show is expected to run this summer. The show has some impressive backing, the series comes from Larry Charles (Seinfeld), Matt Nix (Burn Notice) and Ben Wexler (Community, Arrested Development), who will all be credit as writers and executive producers. Crystal himself will be credit as well.
FX Networks president John Landgraf stated, “It truly is an honor to be in business with Billy Crystal and Larry Charles, two of the all-time greats in comedy.” Landgraf later added, “We have also wanted for some time to be in business with Matt Nix, who has done such an amazing job creating and running Burn Notice. They, along with Ben Wexler, are an unbeatable team and we’re incredibly excited about this project.”
Comedy series has been a big push for FX this year as the network prepares to launch FXX this fall. This new network will focus on younger demographics, which is why Crystal’s show will be perfect for beefing up the FX older-demographic offerings.
