He’s one of the cutest animated critters on TV and a personal favorite series of mine on YouTube. Now it seems that the monochrome cat may be landing its own series.
It was announced today that Entertainment One has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to “Simon’s Cat,” with current-plans to license the cat to television, or other digital outlets. The cat is a virtual star, with 1.77 million subscribers on YouTube and a habit of getting into trouble and for being hungry. “This deal marks eOne’s first major step towards the development of licensing programs for brands conceived in the non-linear space for a broader audience,” said Olivier Dumont, who is the managing director for eOne Licensing and eOne Family.
The series was created by the British animator Simon Tofield, and he has made 32 episodes on YouTube so far. “I’m delighted that Simon’s Cat is now working in partnership with eOne and feel that this move represents the start of an exciting new phase for our character brand,” said Mike Bell, director of Simon’s Cat Ltd.
