Events: VH1 will debut ‘Downloaded’ Napster Doc from Alex Winter on VOD and in NY and LA

The initial debut of ‘Downloaded’ was at SXSW 2013 and at Toronto’s Hot Docs, the film was well met by fans and critics as it followed the rise and ultimate destruction of Napster.

VH1 will be presenting the summer theatrical run and VOD airings of the VH1 rockDoc ‘DOWNLOADED’by noted filmmaker and actor Alex Winter later this summer. “VH1 is so proud of this timely project, and we want to showcase it in as many ways as possible,” said Brad Abramson, Vice President, Programming and Production, VH1. “Alex has been the perfect partner and has created a film that matches the high-quality caliber and pop culture impact of other award-winning ‘rockDocs’ that we’ve taken to theatrical.”

“This project has been important to me for many years and it’s been great to see it realized with the team at VH1 rockDocs,” said director Alex Winter “We’ve had a very strong festival run so far and I look forward to getting it out to a wider audience.”

The film will open at Manhattan’s Village East Cinema on Friday, June 21 and the Sundance Sunset Cinemas in Los Angeles on June 28. Additional theatrical bookings are scheduled for Albuquerque, Austin, Chicago, Columbus, Grand Rapids, Martha’s Vineyard, San Francisco and Seattle, as well as other cities to be announced, in partnership with specialty distributor Richard Abramowitz of Abramorama.

On July 1, the film will debut on all leading On Demand platforms including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Comcast, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and XBOX, in partnership with digital entertainment curator FilmBuff. “DOWNLOADED speaks directly to the current conversations around the ownership of digital content that we deal with daily,” says Steven Beckman, FilmBuff’s Head of Content Partnerships.

DOWNLOADED, years in the making and part of VH1’s celebrated, Emmy-winning series of rockDocs, previewed in 2012 at SXSW and had its world premiere there last March with appearances by several of the film’s subjects, including Napster founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker; DJ Spooky; musician and activist Chuck D; musician and John Perry Barlow, co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

DOWNLOADED focuses on the advent of digital media sharing, including the rise of game-changing company Napster and its controversial online pioneers Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. The digital revolution ultimately created a technology paradigm shift and upended both the music industry and music artists, and changed the world. The film features insights from such well-known artists and figures within the music industry as: The Beastie Boys’ Mike D; Noel Gallagher; Henry Rollins; former Sony Music Chairman Don Ienner; former record producer and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell; Sire Records co-founder Seymour Stein; Grateful Dead lyricist, poet, essayist and “cyberlibertarian” activist JP Barlow; Hilary Rosen, former CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America; Harvard law professor and political activist Lawrence Lessig, and other industry executives, government officials and leaders in the world of civil and digital rights.

VH1 produced DOWNLOADED for its Emmy Award-winning film series VH1 rockDocs, whose films have included the Emmy Award winning ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL, THE US VS. JOHN LENNON, SOUL POWER, MARLEY and more. Ultimately, following the theatrical and On Demand windows, VH1 will air the film, most likely in 2014. In the meantime it serves as a standard bearer of its rockDocs program.
DOWNLOADED is written, directed and executive produced by Alex Winter and executive produced by Maggie Malina. Consulting producer is Thom Zimny; music is composed by DJ Spooky; editor is Jacob Craycroft and the director of photography is Anghel Decca. Executive Producers for VH1 are Brad Abramson, Warren Cohen, Rick Krim, Bill Flanagan, Shelly Tatro, and Jeff Olde.
