It has been a while since Zach Braff has put out a movie, the actor-writer-director has taken to Kickstarter to launch his next project and it seems everyone is eager to chip-in.
Zach left a personal message to his many, many fans on his Kickstarter funding page. In the video (shown below) he answers a few of the most commonly asked questions about his career. What finally pushed Braff into funding the project on Kickstarter was the recent success of the Veronica Mars project. Braff stated, “After I saw the incredible way “Veronica Mars” fans rallied around Kristen Bell and her show’s creator Rob Thomas, I couldn’t help but think (like I’m sure so many other independent filmmakers did) maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn’t involve signing away all your artistic control”.
Artistic control has always been a priority to Braff and is listed as one of the major reasons that he has turned down larger studios’ requests to make another film. The film will be called “Wish I Was Here” and Braff will play the lead-role Aidan Bloom who is a “struggling actor, father and husband”. The film follows Bloom as he struggles to find himself in his mid-thirties while supporting a wife and children.
The film seems to capture the same internal struggles and relationship issues that made ‘Garden State’ such a huge success, and those topics are something that Braff has always done a wonderful job exploring in his work. Almost 10 years after Garden State premiered it seems that Braff is ready to get back to making films and his Kickstarter is already doing extreamly well, at 10% of his $2 million goal in just a few minutes. There are some terrific gifts for backers as well, including a chance to be in the movie with a speaking role, which would make you SAG qualified in minutes most likely. Something to think about if you are interested in fulfilling your acting career.
