Celebrate 57 years of videotape with YouTube’s ‘tape mode’ setting

Get ready to set the tracking and hit rewind, because the commercial videotape medium is 57 years old this week, and Google wants to celebrate.

Google is temporarily adding a ‘tape mode’ to its YouTube videos, giving viewers the warm and fuzzy images that they may remember from their childhood. This week is the anniversary of the Ampex VRX-1000, or “first commercial video cassette recorder” as stated by Google. The actual date of course is April 14th, 1956. It was on that day that the device was greeted with amazement at the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters Convention.

If you want to take a trip back through time, you can click the VHS button on the bottom-right of the video player.
