The last few weeks have been a series of great announcements for fans of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise. It seems everything is falling into place for the next installment, and George Lucas and teams are in the last steps before confirming the cast-list.
Ever since Disney took control of Star Wars late last fall, fans have been eagerly anticipating statements from the producing teams. Earlier this week we reported that Carie Fisher had confirmed her role as Princess Leia and before that Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill were both reported to return to their roles as Han Solo and Luke Skywalker respectively.
There is some confusion on the matter, Carrie Fisher’s agent for example, denied rumors at first that Fisher had signed onto the role, yet Fisher herself talked about her character last week in the before mentioned interview. George Lucas told Bloomberg Businessweek, “We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison” but then added, “or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation”.
It seems like all three main cast members are a lock, but of course there is some negotiations that must go through. More than likely Disney will want to make a formal announcement on the matter and make a very large deal that the cast is returning. Lucas seemed to reflect that idea when he stated, “I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do” in the same interview with Bloomberg Businessweek that we mentioned earlier.
Lucas himself will still play an instrumental role in the making of the next three Star Wars films, though he no longer controls the exclusive rights to the franchise.
